Moral Universalism

Why Humanity Needs Universal Morality

1) "Why Humanity Needs Universal Morality." Web. 29 Mar. 2011.

2) The two ways people usually decide what is right or wrong is by making a judgment based on instinct, or they make a decision based on what someone tells them to do who they consider to be a moral authority.  If we allow ourselves to make every decision based off of instinct, the conclusion could lead to  future conflicts that could threaten our existence. If we choose to listen to someone we consider to be a moral authority, the outcome will probably be flawed.  This is because the people we consider to be of authority are usually political figures or elders, all of whom have different opinions on the way to conduct ourselves.

Different conclusions on what is right or wrong has been the driving factor of all human conflict.  Whether the conflict is on a tribal scale or an international scale.  Different sets of values and ethnocentrism always result in conflict.  Universal Morality is the only hope for humanity.  It is just a matter of time before we kill each other off because of differences of opinion.  The only way for there to be and form of world peace will be with universal moral standards which everyone agrees to adhere by.

3) This article explains the importance of Universal Morality and how non-universal morality threatens humanity and is the main cause of all conflicts between humans.

4) " (This is a joke told by Emo Philips.) Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "God loves you. Do you believe in God?" He said, "Yes." I said, "Are you a Christian or a Jew?" He said, "A Christian." I said, "Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?" He said, "Protestant." I said, "Me, too! What franchise?" He said, "Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?" He said, "Northern Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist." I said, "Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region." I said, "Me, too!" Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, "Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912." I said, "Die, heretic!" And I pushed him over."

" the only hope for humanity will be a morality that replaces our present methods of determining right and wrong. We need a moral system that makes it immoral to hurt other people, no matter how much it helps us and our group"
